While you look to find different types of resumes, you will find it hard to point out whether there are three, four or more types of resumes. Many books and websites that detail about the steps involved in writing resumes tell you that you can find three types of resumes, while others tell you there are four.
Some classify resumes as chronological and
reverse chronological. It all depends on the type of job you apply for
and the skills, experiences, and qualifications you want to highlight.
One thing about resumes that always has difference is about the length
of the resume. Career counselors will tell you about the merits and
demerits of a long resume and a short resume.
Length of the Resume
An effective one page resume is often considered better than one that runs over several pages. There are reasons why people recommend short resumes include the time constraints of the employer, who is already busy managing different business activities.
Also what HR people are looking for is key competencies. They quickly browse through the resumes to locate any keywords. This is the key, being short doesn’t mean you should not highlight your achievements in the past.
Curriculum Vitae or CV is a relatively longer resume, which has its own merit. CVs have all the data regarding educational qualification, experiences (as intern, volunteer and employment), hard skills and references or testimonials from previous employer.
It is an art and skill in itself to prepare a condensed one page resume that highlights all the key aspects that the employer has been asking for through his advertisement. Importantly don’t bring in any negative aspects regarding your work history in a one page resume. You can’t justify a black-mark, if any in your one page resume.
