I remember quite clearly sitting in my high school guidance counselor’s
office, wondering what I was going to be when I grew up. It was quite a
daunting experience because I really had no idea.
I knew there were a lot of things I liked to do, but I needed help with career advice. Your high school guidance counselor is one of many people you may turn to in your life for career advice. They will probably be one of the first, in a list of many, that will help guide you down the right path. Some people know what they want, while others need help. Many people don’t know what they want even after they have left high school, so they have to turn to someone else for career advice. There are many great resources out there to help you figure out what you might be good at, or what you might like to do. Some common tools people use are career tests and quizzes. These will give you some idea about where your strengths are, and what kind of careers you should consider. This is great for knowing what you may be good at, but at the same time, it may not help you find where your passion lies. Some turn to career coaches when they are looking for a career, or guidance in their current career. If you don’t know what you want to do, or you aren’t sure you want to remain in your current career, these people may be a great source of career advice for you. If you are stuck, and nothing seems to help you discover a direction, think about earning a degree. The hard part may be deciding what degree you want to earn. Do research on schools both in and out of your community, and online. You may not know what you are looking for, but if you see something of interest, a light bulb may go off in your head. For those stuck in a rut in their current job, career advice may need to come from someone they admire. If you have a mentor, or someone in your company you think highly of, ask them for some career advice. Many may be willing to offer you their wisdom because they may have been were you are at one point in their lives. If none of the above works for you, you may have to find your career advice internally. It might be a simple exercise in getting to know yourself, and deciding what makes you happy. It’s one thing to choose a career based on salary, and quite another to find one that makes your heart sing. A little time with yourself might be the very best place to find career advice that will guide you in the right direction. |
